Using metric recipes with a US scale
Recipes from Europe, Australia and most professional bakeries list ingredients in grams. If your scale only reads ounces, divide each weight by 28.35. For 250 g of flour that's 8.82 oz, and 125 g of sugar is 4.41 oz. Keep one decimal place, because rounding 8.82 down to 8.5 oz loses nearly 10 g.
Better still, switch the scale to grams. Most kitchen scales read in 1 g steps but in only 0.05 or 0.1 oz steps, so grams are more precise for small amounts such as yeast and salt. A 7 g packet of yeast is a quarter of an ounce, which a 0.1 oz scale can't measure accurately.
Pack sizes: 100 g bars and 250 g butter
Metric pack sizes rarely land on round ounces. A 100 g chocolate bar is 3.53 oz, a 250 g block of European butter is 8.82 oz (more than two US sticks at 4 oz each), and a 500 g bag of pasta is 17.6 oz, more than a US one-pound box.
For nutrition tracking, labels give values per 100 g, so a 40 g serving of a food with 400 kcal per 100 g has 160 kcal. That calculation is easier to do in grams than in ounces. Our calories calculator helps you set the daily target those servings count against.
Frequently asked questions
How many ounces are in 100 grams?
100 grams is 3.527 ounces, or about 3½ oz. Nutrition labels outside the US list values per 100 g. To turn those into a per-ounce figure, multiply the per-100 g value by 0.2835, because one ounce is 28.35% of 100 g.
Is a gram heavier than an ounce?
No. A gram is much lighter, about 1/28 of an ounce, so a weight in grams is always a bigger number than the same weight in ounces. For scale, a paper clip weighs roughly a gram and a slice of bread around an ounce. If 200 g converts to more than 200 oz, the factor has been applied the wrong way.
Should I convert grams to fluid ounces for liquids?
Only for water and liquids with a similar density, where 1 mL weighs about 1 g. For water, 100 g is about 100 mL, or 3.38 US fl oz. Oil is lighter and syrup heavier, so the same weight takes up a different volume. For liquids sold by volume, use the mL to fl oz converter.
