Milliliters to Fluid Ounces (mL to oz)
To convert milliliters to US fluid ounces, divide by 29.5735295625. A 250 mL glass holds 8.45 fl oz, and a 500 mL bottle holds 16.9 fl oz. The UK imperial fluid ounce is smaller (28.41 mL), so the table shows both.

How to convert mL to oz
fl oz = mL ÷ 29.5735295625
One US fluid ounce is exactly 29.5735295625 milliliters, so divide by 29.5735295625. If you'd rather multiply, use 0.033814 (rounded).
Worked example: converting 250 mL:
- fl oz = mL ÷ 29.5735295625
- 250 mL ÷ 29.5735295625 = 8.45351 fl oz

US vs. imperial fluid ounces
There are two fluid ounces in common use. The US customary fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon, exactly 29.5735295625 mL. The imperial fluid ounce used in the UK is 1/160 of an imperial gallon, exactly 28.4130625 mL. So 500 mL is 16.91 US fl oz but 17.60 imperial fl oz.
The gap is about 4%. That won't ruin a soup, but it does matter for baby formula, medicine cups and cocktail ratios. If a recipe or label comes from the UK, Ireland or an older Australian or Canadian source, check which ounce it means before converting.
Nutrition labels, cans and the 100 mL travel rule
The net-contents line on US packaging converts exactly, so a 12 fl oz can is labelled 355 mL (354.9 mL rounded). The Nutrition Facts serving size is different: FDA labeling rules round 1 fl oz to 30 mL there, so an 8 fl oz serving is shown as 240 mL. European cans are 330 mL, a little smaller at 11.16 fl oz, and a standard 750 mL wine bottle holds 25.4 fl oz.
Carry-on liquid limits are set at 100 mL per container. The US TSA publishes that as 3.4 oz, the result of converting 100 mL (3.38 fl oz) and rounding up. A 3.4 oz bottle bought in the US therefore meets the 100 mL rule abroad.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce of weight?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce (avoirdupois) measures weight. One US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz, so the two are close for water and similar liquids. For oil, honey or flour they differ a lot, so a recipe that says '8 oz' of a dry ingredient means weight, not a measuring cup.
How many mL is a shot?
There's no single legal shot size. In the US a 'standard' 1.5 fl oz jigger is common, which is 44.4 mL. Bars elsewhere pour 20 mL, 25 mL, 35 mL or 40 mL measures set by local rules or custom. Convert the specific pour size your recipe or bar uses rather than assuming one figure.
How many fluid ounces are in a liter?
A liter is 33.814 US fluid ounces, or 35.195 imperial fluid ounces. A 1-liter bottle is a little more than a US quart (32 fl oz), which is why liter bottles hold slightly more than quart containers. For larger volumes, the liters to gallons converter is usually easier.
