Converting body weight from kg to lbs
Most of the world records body weight in kilograms, while US doctors' scales, gym logs and driver's licenses use pounds. A 70 kg adult weighs 154.3 lb, and 90 kg is 198.4 lb. For UK readers the table above also shows the result in stone and pounds.
Many health formulas are written for kilograms. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation behind our BMR calculator multiplies weight in kg by 10, and protein targets are usually quoted in grams per kilogram. So if you weigh yourself in pounds, you have to convert before plugging the number in. Our protein calculator does that step for you when you pick US units.
Luggage, gym plates and bulk goods
Many airlines cap a checked bag at 23 kg, and US carriers advertise the same limit as 50 lb. In fact 23 kg is 50.7 lb, so a bag that only just passes in kilograms can be 0.7 lb over on a scale set to pounds. A standard men's Olympic barbell is 20 kg (44.1 lb). That's why it isn't quite the same as the 45 lb bar sold in US gyms.
Bagged materials sold in metric countries usually come in 25 kg sacks, which is 55.1 lb, not the 50 lb or 60 lb bags common in US hardware stores. Check the sack weight before you reuse a material estimate from the other system.
Frequently asked questions
What's a quick way to convert kg to lbs in my head?
Double the kilograms, then add 10% of that result. For 70 kg: 70 × 2 = 140, plus 14 gives 154 lb, against an exact answer of 154.32 lb. The shortcut uses 2.2 instead of 2.20462, so it always comes out about 0.2% low. That's close enough for luggage or body weight, but not for medication doses.
Is a kilogram heavier than a pound?
Yes. A kilogram is about 2.2 times as heavy as a pound, so the number in pounds is always larger than the same weight in kilograms. One pound is 0.454 kg, a little under half a kilogram. If a conversion gives you a smaller number of pounds than kilograms, the factor was applied the wrong way round.
How do I convert kg to stone and pounds?
First convert kilograms to pounds, then divide by 14, because a stone is exactly 14 lb. The whole number is the stone and the remainder is the extra pounds. For example, 80 kg = 176.37 lb; 176.37 ÷ 14 = 12 stone with 8.4 lb left over, so 12 st 8 lb. The table on this page includes that column.
Why does my scale show a slightly different number than this converter?
Most bathroom scales show 0.1 or 0.2 increments and convert internally using a rounded factor, then round the display again. The conversion here uses the exact legal definition with no rounding until the final display. A gap of 0.1 to 0.2 lb is a display rounding difference, not a sign that either figure is wrong.
