Reading metric apartment and house sizes

Rental and sale listings across Europe, Asia, Latin America and Australia give floor area in m². To picture them in US terms, multiply by 10.76. A 35 m² studio is 377 sq ft, a 70 m² two-bedroom is 753 sq ft, and a 150 m² family home is 1,615 sq ft.

A quick check: 1 m² is a bit under 11 sq ft, so adding a zero and then about 8% gets you close. 80 m² becomes 800 + 64 = 864 sq ft, against an exact 861. That shortcut overshoots by about 0.3%, which is good enough when scrolling listings but not for a contract.

      Metric plans and US materials

If you're buying US materials for a space measured in meters, convert the area once and plan in square feet. A 20 m² room is 215.3 sq ft. Most paint, flooring and drywall coverage in US stores is quoted per square foot. The paint calculator and flooring calculator will also accept metric dimensions directly.

For land larger than about 10,000 m² (one hectare), acres are usually the more useful US unit, and one hectare is 2.47 acres. For fields and plots, the hectares to acres converter skips the large square-foot numbers.

      Frequently asked questions

How many square feet is a 10 × 10 meter room?

A 10 × 10 m room is 100 m², which is 1,076.4 sq ft. Each side is 32.8 ft, and 32.8 × 32.8 gives the same answer. Expect it to look much bigger than '10 by 10' sounds to someone used to feet, since a 10 × 10 ft room is only 100 sq ft.

How do I convert a price per m² to a price per square foot?

Divide the price per square meter by 10.764. A rent or sale price of 5,000 per m² is about 464.5 per sq ft in the same currency. Multiplying instead would inflate the figure more than a hundredfold, so it helps to sanity-check that the per-square-foot price comes out smaller.

What does m² mean, and is it the same as 'sqm' or 'sq m'?

Yes. m², sqm, sq m and m2 all mean square meters, the area of a square one meter on each side. Listings and spreadsheets often use 'sqm' or 'm2' because the superscript is hard to type. Don't confuse any of them with cubic meters (m³), which measure volume.
