Ceiling heights, rooms and buildings
Floor plans outside the US give dimensions in meters (or in millimeters on architectural drawings). A 2.4 m ceiling, common in many metric homes, is 7 ft 10.5 in, just under the 8 ft ceilings typical of US houses. A 4 × 5 m room is 13.1 × 16.4 ft. To get the floor area in square feet, multiply those converted sides together, or use the square footage calculator.
Don't convert an area with the length factor. One square meter is 10.76 sq ft, not 3.28 sq ft. That's the most common mistake when reading metric floor plans. The square meters to square feet converter handles the squared factor.
Sports, swimming pools and landmarks
Olympic pools are 50 m long (164 ft), and short-course pools are 25 m (82 ft). A 100 m sprint covers 328 ft. In athletics, field events are measured in meters, so a 2.45 m high jump is 8 ft ½ in. Converting to feet and inches is usually how US broadcasters explain a record jump.
Mount Everest's height of 8,848.86 m, announced by China and Nepal in 2020, converts to 29,031.7 ft. For distances measured in hundreds of meters or more, kilometers and miles are usually easier, so try the km to miles converter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert meters to feet and inches?
Divide the meters by 0.0254 to get total inches, then split off multiples of 12. For 1.75 m: 1.75 ÷ 0.0254 = 68.9 in, which is 5 ft and 8.9 in. Alternatively, divide by 0.3048 for decimal feet (5.74 ft) and multiply the decimal part by 12 to get the inches.
Is a meter longer than a yard?
Yes, slightly. A yard is exactly 0.9144 m, so a meter is 1.0936 yards, about 9% longer. That's why 100 m is about 109 yards, and a 100 m race is longer than a 100-yard dash. Sports fields and fabric are the places you'll most often see both units.
What was the US survey foot?
The US survey foot was defined as 1200/3937 m, about 2 parts per million longer than the international foot of 0.3048 m. It was used in some US land surveys and state plane coordinates, and NIST officially retired it at the end of 2022. For everyday measurements the difference is far too small to notice.
