Quick reference: everyday kilometers in miles

      • 5K race

        5 km = 3.10686 mi

      • 10K race

        10 km = 6.21371 mi

      • Half marathon

        21.0975 km = 13.1094 mi

      • Marathon

        42.195 km = 26.2188 mi

      • 100 km ultramarathon

        100 km = 62.1371 mi

      Race distances in miles

Road races are measured in kilometers even in the US. The exceptions are the half marathon and marathon, which runners usually quote in miles. A 5K is 3.11 miles and a 10K is 6.21 miles. The half marathon is defined as 21.0975 km (13.11 mi) and the marathon as 42.195 km (26.22 mi). That's why marathon distance is written as 26.2 miles, not 26.

GPS watches round each kilometer or mile split on their own, so your watch total may differ slightly from the certified course. Race courses are measured along the shortest route a runner could take, and most people run a bit further than that.

The Fibonacci trick for km to miles

      The ratio between consecutive Fibonacci numbers (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34…) approaches 1.618, which is close to 1.609. So any Fibonacci number of kilometers is roughly the previous Fibonacci number in miles: 8 km ≈ 5 mi (exactly 4.97), 13 km ≈ 8 mi (8.08), 21 km ≈ 13 mi (13.05).

For numbers that aren't in the sequence, multiply by 0.6 and add a little. 0.6 alone is about 3.4% low, and 0.62 is within 0.3%. For trip planning, fuel or pace, use the exact result above.

      Frequently asked questions

Which is longer, a kilometer or a mile?

A mile is longer, about 1.6 times the length of a kilometer. One mile equals 1.609344 km, so a distance in miles is always a smaller number than the same distance in kilometers. If converting 10 km gives you more than 10 miles, the factor was multiplied instead of divided.

Is a nautical mile the same as a mile?

No. A nautical mile, used at sea and in aviation, is exactly 1.852 km, or about 1.15 ordinary (statute) miles. Speeds in knots are nautical miles per hour. The converter on this page uses the statute mile used on US and UK roads, which is 1.609344 km.

How long does it take to walk a kilometer compared with a mile?

At a steady 5 km/h walking pace, a kilometer takes 12 minutes and a mile takes about 19 minutes 19 seconds. The mile is 1.609 times longer, so it takes 1.609 times as long at the same speed. Faster or slower walkers can scale both times by the same ratio.
