      Road distances and odometers

The US and the UK post road distances in miles, while Canada, Ireland and most of continental Europe use kilometers. A 60-mile drive is 96.6 km, so a sign showing 100 km to the next city means a little over an hour at highway speed. For speeds rather than distances, see the mph to km/h converter.

Rental cars from either side of the border can show the odometer in either unit, and many let you switch the trip display. If you log business mileage for tax purposes, record the unit the odometer actually showed and convert afterwards. Rounding each trip before you add them up introduces small errors.

      Cycling centuries and running mileage

Cyclists call a 100-mile ride a century, which is 160.9 km. A 'metric century' is 100 km, only 62.1 miles. Weekly running volume works the same way: a 30-mile week is 48.3 km, and a 40-mile marathon-training week is 64.4 km.

If you're switching a training plan from miles to kilometers, convert each total and then round to whole kilometers, rather than rounding the miles first. Pace needs its own conversion: an 8:00 per mile pace is 4:58 per kilometer, because each kilometer is only 62% of a mile.

      Frequently asked questions

How many kilometers is 1 mile exactly?

Exactly 1.609344 km. The figure isn't measured or rounded. It follows from the 1959 definition of the yard as 0.9144 m, multiplied by the 1,760 yards in a mile. Using 1.6 is 0.6% low, which is about 1 km short over a 100-mile drive.

How do I convert a pace in minutes per mile to minutes per kilometer?

Divide the pace by 1.609344. Convert the pace to seconds first: an 8:00 mile pace is 480 seconds, and 480 ÷ 1.609344 = 298.3 seconds, or 4:58 per km. A 10:00 mile pace becomes 6:13 per km. Going the other way, multiply a per-km pace by 1.609344.

Does the US still use the survey mile?

Not for new work. The US survey mile, based on the survey foot of 1200/3937 m, was officially retired at the end of 2022. It was only about 3.2 mm longer than the international mile, so the difference only ever mattered for land surveying over long distances. Everyday distances use the international mile.
