Home sizes and floor plans in square meters
US and Canadian listings give floor area in square feet, while most other countries use square meters. Dividing by 10.764 gives the same answer as multiplying by 0.0929. So a 1,500 sq ft home is 139.4 m², and a 12 × 12 ft bedroom (144 sq ft) is 13.4 m².
Countries also measure floor area differently: some include wall thickness, balconies or shared areas, and others don't. A converted figure is exact for the number you started with, but two listings from different countries may not be measuring the same thing. To work out an area from room dimensions, use the square footage calculator, which handles irregular rooms.
Flooring, tile and price per square meter
Flooring and tile boxes list coverage in the unit of the market they're sold in. A box covering 20 sq ft covers 1.86 m², so you'd need about 5.4 boxes for 10 m² before allowing for waste. The flooring calculator and tile calculator add a cut-and-waste allowance in either unit. Roofers price by the 'square', which is 100 sq ft or 9.29 m².
Prices per unit area convert the opposite way. A price per square foot becomes a price per square meter when you multiply by 10.764, because each square meter contains 10.764 square feet. For example, 3 dollars per sq ft is 32.29 dollars per m². Getting this backwards is the most common mistake when comparing quotes between countries.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I just multiply square feet by 0.3048?
Because area has two dimensions, both have to be converted. A square foot is 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m = 0.0929 m². Multiplying by 0.3048 only once would make a 1,000 sq ft space 304.8 m², more than three times its true size of 92.9 m². Always use the squared factor.
How do I convert room dimensions in feet to square meters?
Either multiply the dimensions in feet and convert the area, or convert each side to meters first and then multiply. Both give the same answer. For a 15 × 12 ft room: 180 sq ft × 0.0929 = 16.72 m², or 4.572 m × 3.658 m = 16.72 m².
Is 10.76 or 10.764 the right factor?
The exact factor is 1 m² = 10.7639104 sq ft, so 10.764 is accurate to about eight parts per million and 10.76 to about 0.04%. Both are fine for estimating materials. For legal documents or land records, use the exact definition (1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m²), which is what this converter uses.
